Last night (Wed 27th Feb) I had the pleasure to enjoy a fabulous production of Iolanthe by the University Gilbert & Sullivan Society. It continues for a further 2 nights at the University Church at the High Street and is truly worth seeing.
This setting for Iolanthe, one of the most amusing of Gilbert & Sullivans comic operas, is simple, which puts the spotlight fully on the cast of singers. They handle it with ease, the singing from the lead roles a joy to behold, with fabulous support from the rest of the cast and choruses, equally competent. The comedy is worked well by all the cast, the Lord Chancellor earning great applause for his most amusing interpretation of his role.
The wonderful maturity, with again, simplicity, of the direction allows the cast to blossom and the audience to hear , see and enjoy. The orchestra play a major role in this production and they rise to it with a thoroughly professional sound.
My rating: a well deserved *****
